An honest appraisal.

I take it that “hacking” had a different meaning in the late 1980s. I couldn’t find what I think is J. J.’s usage in Merriam-Webster.

Hack = cab

Wow, ‘hacking’. Now that I think of it, we used to use that as a word for coughing as well.

Performance art is in the mind of the beholder…

Hacking – coughing up something nasty like a furball; trying to sneak in your back door in computer terms; cab driving. Yeah, it all fits together in several cases.

She was either mistaken, or engaging in a well-crafted bit of sarcasm.

J.J, just inadvertently exposed one of the weaknesses of her craft. It can be like crying wolf. As with Andy Kaufman, you can lose people’s trust, so they no longer know when you’re performing and when you’re not. Some may be okay with that, though. I would consider it a disadvantage when the time comes that you need to be earnestly understood, but no longer can.

Yes being a hack means someone who is poor at it and still tries to take over as the leading member in anything.

She IS still performing. But that doesn’t mean it’s not also real.
