My best friend and I used to get hold of each other by standing out in the yard and shouting. We were about half a city block apart, with a clear shot through the backs of two two-acre lots. Sometimes one of my sisters would come in from tetherball to tell me, “Go see what Scott wants. He’s out there hollering for you.”
