I had a wooden nickel once. It vanished when my parents sold the house.

I don’t know about wooden nickles, but I had a gym teacher who used to give us “Round Tuits”, so that we could give them to people who said that they would do something “if they got around to it”.

I live in “The Nutmeg State” (our official nickname is something else). One story is that sharp Yankee peddlers would sell fake wooden nutmegs to unsuspecting marks. I wonder if there’s a connection to the “wooden nickels” saying.

One thing that strikes me about these early strips is that Charlie Brown is noticeably smaller than the other kids.

In other words, vapid.

Adulthood is way overrated.

The Babbitt and the Bromide……

At last we are given Shermy’s name. This is the first of the oldest strips that names him.

Two takeaways her: 1) Charlie Brown without his iconic flat-topped winter hat and 2) Someone was actually being civil to him!

With out euphemism’s our conversations would be much shorter and less entertaining.
