Why were you even leaving your candy bar on the sidewalk in the first place, Charlie Brown? Oh, that’s because you didn’t want melted chocolate in your trousers pocket, right?
There are always reminders at times like these how dangerous chocolate is for dogs.
My family once owned a convenience store, and we had a small toy poodle dog who would sneak from the back room around the tall counter and steal Hershey’s kisses from the box near the bottom of the display rack next to the cash register, and carry them back into the back room, meticulously unwrap each candy with her tiny paws and scarf it down. It wasn’t until the sixth stolen kiss that she was discovered, and as far as I can recall she suffered no ill effects, though I was very young at the time and for all I know she may have had to go to the vet. She lived another good 6 or 7 years after that…
Darby Conley dedicated one of the “Get Fuzzy” books to his childhood dog, and noted that “she probably ate chocolate every day of her life. I’m not recommending this, I’m just sayin.’”
Yes, it’s not good to give chocolate to a dog, but it’s not necessarily a death sentence if they find some (as they are wont to do).

Chocolate is poisonous to dogs. Why did you leave it where Snoopy could get it?
