Good one Snoopy!

They pop up like you just did. I was in Africa once, and my wife and I were walking back to our tent near some grass that was about 2-3 ft high. A black mamba popped up about a foot above the grass maybe 15 ft from us. We stared at each other for about 30 secs and it disappeared and when on it’s way. Good thing I didn’t find out what it was until later. I’d have freaked with my wife so close. A few minutes later the staff killed it cuz they didn’t want it wandering around the camp.

I’m pretty sure they smell where they are going.

My experience was similar, if not as exotic as uniquename’s. I saw a large black snake moving across a pasture with its head about 6 inches above the grass.

We ate our lunch under a tree in Egypt. As soon as we walked away, a giant cobra slithered down from the tree. Some other people had seen it on a branch over us, but figured it was snoozing and it was better not to tell us and have us freak out and startle it.
