I remember when my grandfather died in 1973….an old Italian immigrant who didn’t have two nickels to rub together all his life, but took pride in his appearance…especially having well-shined shoes. We made sure we bought him a brand new, shiny pair of dress shoes to be buried in, because he would have wanted to look his best at the Pearly Gates.

" Bury me in my overalls, don’t use my gabardines

Bury me in my overalls or in my beat-up jeans"

It appears that shoes were especially important to Italian immigrants. Had to do with the price of shoes when they were young.

I asked to be buried with shoes on – just in case it’s hot where I’m going…

My religion buries in a winding sheet – no clothes, but my mom buried my dad and her parents in clothing. (We have closed casket funerals.) I told husband – jeans, tee shirt, sweatshirt, usual white cotton socks and sneakers – and all of my eyeglasses – put the variable focus on me and the others nearby as I need to switch them constantly any way. Then again, my goal in life is to either go a minute before him or a minute after – in the first case he will be alone for a minute here, but he hates new places and I will have it all figured out for him in the minute I am there – in the second, he will have to be alone only a minute and not be alone on this side which would upset him.
