I remember when my grandfather died in 1973….an old Italian immigrant who didn’t have two nickels to rub together all his life, but took pride in his appearance…especially having well-shined shoes. We made sure we bought him a brand new, shiny pair of dress shoes to be buried in, because he would have wanted to look his best at the Pearly Gates.

(colloquial) (relative) grandpaa. grandpa (colloquial) Mi abuelito siempre me cuenta historias de cuando era joven. My grandpa is always telling me stories from when he was young.b. granddad (colloquial) Mi abuelito tiene 85 años y todavía está muy sano.My granddad is 85 now, and he’s still very healthy.c. granddaddy (colloquial) (United States) Mi abuelito sabe mucho de fútbol. My granddaddy knows a lot about soccer.
My religion buries in a winding sheet – no clothes, but my mom buried my dad and her parents in clothing. (We have closed casket funerals.) I told husband – jeans, tee shirt, sweatshirt, usual white cotton socks and sneakers – and all of my eyeglasses – put the variable focus on me and the others nearby as I need to switch them constantly any way. Then again, my goal in life is to either go a minute before him or a minute after – in the first case he will be alone for a minute here, but he hates new places and I will have it all figured out for him in the minute I am there – in the second, he will have to be alone only a minute and not be alone on this side which would upset him.

Bury me in my overalls or in my beat-up jeans"
It appears that shoes were especially important to Italian immigrants. Had to do with the price of shoes when they were young.

I asked to be buried with shoes on – just in case it’s hot where I’m going…
