My husband is Elly and I am John. We had 9 days of honeymoon in Hawaii and probably spent about 4 hours at various pools/beaches. I could have done with 4 days (and spent the other 5 doing other stuff)

Each wants do do what they miss otherwise: John, who works hard away from home, wants nothing but relaxation. Elly, stuck at home every day, wants to get out and see things and go places.
In the next strip, the problem is solved logically!
(I’ve read the 1st 20 “collection” books many times.)
when my mister and I went to Turks and Caicos last year,, anytime after 11 a.m. it was too hot and muggy to do anything but hide in a shaded area with a drink,, it wasn’t till after 3 or 4 before we dared anything like shopping or touring.
I’m with Elly… I can relax very well at home (that is if my kids are elsewhere). If I go somewhere… I want to explore and experience. I wouldn’t be bugging the hubby though, I’d just leave his toosh there and go have fun.
I’m with Elly too. I can’t imagine why anyone would go to all the bother & expense of going away somewhere just to lie around. I can lie around at home much more comfortably, easily, & cheaply. If I’m going to go somewhere, I want to do something I can’t do at home.
I agree with those who said to each his/her own. I’ve never understood why married couples think they have to be joined at the hip. My hubby of 33 years does his thing, I do mine, and we’re still married and a lot less resentful.
And if there were no beach, I wouldn’t even get out of bed.
I HATE vacations where every minute is planned. That’s not a vacation. Going someplace and deciding to hit the amusement parks, and some other fun things is one thing, but don’t go scheduling my days and nights, or waking me up to get there early. We’ll get there when we get there. It’ll still be open.
I agree jerzy. While I enjoy going to the beach, if I go somewhere I’ve never been before and probably will never go to again, I want to see and do everything there is to see and do! That’s what my husband and I did 22 years ago when we went to Hawaii (specifically Oahu) for our honeymoon. We made it down to the beach a couple of times – but only in the early evening! We were only going to be there for a short 7 days so we did all the tourist attractions we’ve always heard of and wanted to see in the event that work, kids, life, etc., got in the way and we never made it back there again. And guess what? We still haven’t made it back and it’s doubtful we ever will so we’re definitely glad we did everything we wanted to do while we were there at the time. Besides, why go all the way to Hawaii just to lay on the beach the entire time?! If that’s all I wanted to do, it would be closer (and cheaper) going to Florida instead!
But having said that, I think Elly needs to chill out on this one. They just got there and they’re going to be there for 2 whole weeks! There’ll be plenty of time to do both sigthseeing/shopping and just laying around on the beach and not doing anything they don’t want to do. Why spend precious time arguing about it?
GretchensMom, they’ve been there a week already. Ellie has had time to recover from a bad sunburn. I don’t blame her for wanting to do something else if John has been sitting and reading for a whole week already.

Considering Elly’s expression in the last panel, I can see where Elizabeth got her lung power from (see: yesterday’s strip.)

Just go do what you want to do, Elly. You don’t have to spend every minute together, and you’ll be happier if everyone does what they want.

Elly - Shopping: Looking at things you can’t have (afford) anyway. John - Lying on the beach: Looking at things he can’t have either.

You can’t pay that much money and do nothing. You can recover from a vacation when you get home.
