2 words …….WORD PROCESSOR. They were basically dedicated word processing computers, and could not load and run programs like games and such. PERFECT for Adam’s needs (and issues), Search eBay and you can still find them in running condition.
Scissors and paste? Stop Monkeying around Adam. Haven’t you heard of correction fluid. It’s been around since 1956. While it was a great invention Bette Nesmith Graham might argue that Michael was her best invention. ;-)
I took some college classes a few years ago. I also own, and use, an electric typewriter. I turned in a 10 page essay that I typed on my typewriter. The professor (who was 15 years younger than I was) gave me an “F” on the essay. I asked why, and he told me the format was wrong. When I asked him to explain, he said the “printing looked weird” and he couldn’t accept that. I argued that it wasn’t the format he didn’t like, it was the medium, which had no bearing on the contents of the essay. Long story short, I got the “A” I deserved, and continued to use my typewriter.
Dad was a professor and loved clipping out the typed text and using rubber cement to stick the text and illustrations to paper so he could xerox the materials. “This is SO much better than spirit duplicators!”
Long ago, I worked with a professional writer creating documentation of software I developed and the pre-word processor, professional method involves a light table, X-acto knife and rubber cement, not scissors, or paste, or white-out.
Aren’t there computer programs that will block the game or only allow access for certain periods of time? He could have his wife and/or kids enter the password so he wouldn’t know it. And if he doesn’t do a certain amount of work (hours, page count, etc.), they won’t let him play. Of course, that doesn’t guarantee the quality of his work.

I could never go back to a basic typewriter. I have dyslexia and spell checking saves me hours.

After a couple of days of this, he’ll be ready to go back to his computer and stay on task. Never mind, this is Adam I’m talking about.

Yeah, old school typing actually required a bit of skill at ‘typing’. No spell checker either(mixed blessing, that).
