As someone who only heard about “Diane” only through historical mentions on a Wiki page or something, it’s very interesting to actually see her as a REAL CHARACTER. Usually she’s just the focus of Brad’s attention, and that’s all the character she gets. This is the first time we see her inner thoughts and opinions. And she kind of has Brad pegged, but is REALLY mean about it. This is the first real sign that he has no chance.
She’s leaving out of this equation the fact that Brad has a crush on her. He doesn’t care if he sits at an opera with her or in a monster truck rally. He won’t pay much attention to EITHER when she is sitting beside him.
Well, Butterfly is quite long for Puccini’s standard, and this moment is at the end of act II (3 acts version, of course) so he endured pretty well.(I do like Toni, but Diane had better tastes… going to a motorcar show is really too boring for me)

Good Lord. I knew Diane always thought of herself as being above Brad but I never thought she was THIS Bad.
She’s not even a “friend”……,

If he had any brains he would just go home. Not to avoid the opera, but to get away from the girl.

Opera is singing various songs connected by a thin plot. A lot like porn from the 70s to the 90s.
