Ask her to tell you about what life was like when she was a kid. Little by little, she will reveal clues. Then you can say things like, “Was that about 1940?” Eventually she will tell you, one way or the other. Besides, I never understood why women don’t like to tell their age. Especially to someone like their grandchild. Gracie’s going to think anyone who is even 30 is old, so…whatever. I’m proud to be old. So many people don’t get that opportunity.
I remember at our 50th school reunion in 2010, this conversation came up at several tables, the ladies moaning ’n groaning about people knowing their age. Me and a couple other guys mentioned that “we graduated together, so we already KNOW how old you are”Both my Grannys used to say that age is just a number, and I look at it that way everyday, and glad that when my feet touch the ground in the a.m. I look forward to another day !
I have a friend who I think is in her 70s. She is so tight-lipped about her age, that her own daughter didn’t know until just a few years ago. I don’t see any value in being so secretive about it.
Then again, I’m often quiet about my age because people often respond by telling me I’m so young. Well, I’m not especially young. I just hang around with older folks

My mother used to say that age was just a number – and hers was unlisted !

I love telling people my age (I just turned 62). I don’t look my age (in the best way), so I relish the surprise.

For me, age is mind over matter. I don’t mind and it doesn’t matter !

I’ll tell young people the year I was born and they can figure out my age if they want to do the math.
