And, actually, the giant quilting machines aren’t really for home use. My wife spends a lot of time and effort piecing the blocks using her machine, but for quilting a large quilt (say, a bed quilt), it’s worthwhile to hire someone with a giant machine to do the final quilting. (Yeah, there are some quilters who insist on doing everything by hand, but my wife prefers designing, choosing colours, and piecing, to the fairly boring work of final quilting, which is also very awkward if all you have is a “regular” sewing machine the size of the one Betty now has.)
Note to Bub: most quilt shops have “husband chairs” for comfortable sitting and reading while the wives shop.
I still find it weird that Bub seems more into the quilting than Betty. Usually, in a store like that, if a guy comes in alone he has the same lost look on his face as when a woman goes into Home Depot alone.
As a mail carrier for many years you get to know a lot about your customers. One in particular received quilting magazines almost on a daily basis. One morning her husband met me at the mailbox and told me,”more quilting magazines! Oh well,it keeps her out of the taverns!” I still chuckle over that.
I’m curious where this story is going, what’s the twist? Non sequitur: I loathe Home Depot but Ace and True Value hardware stores make me feel I can do anything.
She’s having an odd reaction to a new hobby. Usually, it’s like christmas morning going into a store solely focused on your hobby. It’s strange that she’s become so nervous and dare I say, afraid, at the thought of buying materials.

That’ll break the thread if there’s too much difference between your ability and theirs.

The usual way to start quilting is to sign up for a beginners’ class, or join a guild, or get a “Starting Quilting” book. Actually, kinda obvious.

Too judgmental on Betty’s part – it would serve her right if she ages “badly”.

Is it that Bub is more interested, or just that he did a YouTube deep dive to help Betty and as a consequence, became more informed?
