Originally, circus clowns were best appreciated from a distance. The makeup exaggerated their expressions for a view from the cheap seats.

“So, if we really wanted to bring clowns back…”

“Sorry, I’m going to have to cut you off.”

Are kids today actually frightened of clowns, or just uninterested?

When Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey was about to close, I saw a comment by one of the clowns. He would look out into the audience and see the children with their faces all lit up…because they were looking at their smart phones.

One of my high school friends had a brother & sister-in-law who were the advance clowns for Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey’s Blue Unit. They got married in character in the center ring; he went on to be dean of RBB&B Clown College, then taught at the Goodman School in Chicago. I never found them scary – but only because I never saw them in their regalia………

I never found them scary, except occasionally when they’re designed to be. I didn’t even think the fear existed in all seriousness until adulthood.

Children, young ones are frightened of the guy in a Santa suit. Imagine that fright ensemble of a clown. Terror!

A cheap and easy way to make a scary story and get people’s attention is to take something fun and safe and make out as if its really the opposite. The problem is that when everybody does it then the original meaning gets lost. Our common image of the “devil” with horns and hooves started out as a comedic image. Now clowns are suffering the same fate. The Media uses this cheap gimmick a thousand times a day, making normal daily life look scary and horrifying in order to get more viewers.
