Trouty and I once explored a cave with Rory Calhoun. We ate trail mix but I was careful to edit out all the raisins. Nothing worse than a salty raisin. Trouty was not so discriminate and would just stuff handful after handful into his mouth. I don’t think I need to tell you what happened next.
During the final two decades of the previous century, I entrusted my accounts to three different and seemingly well run independent banks, only to see all three of them taken over by more well known chains within a few years. In exasperation, I went to a Credit Union, only to see that Credit Union over the next couple of years adapt the cumbersome rules, regulations and fees that prompted many to leave regular banks for them. Of course they aren’t charities and they endeavor to make a profit, as any business would. On the other hand, I’m beginning to see why so many of a previous generation saw wisdom in hiding their life savings in their mattresses……

Pelf. There’s a word you don’t see often. “Wealth or riches, especially when dishonestly acquired.”
