During the era of 1950s radio, Elliott Lewis produced “On Stage” and a show called “Crime Classics.” When they aired back to back, he decided to do “Our American Cousin” on On Stage and “The Assassination of Abraham Lincoln” on Crime Classics. People quickly found that, by 1950s standards, the play is simply not funny. Probably not by our standards either.
So, after both shows aired, Lewis supposedly received a telegram from network boss Bill Paley, “Nice idea. Don’t EVER do it again.” Point made.
Looks like Dr Tesla or maybe the nefarious Mr Nexus is behind this bit of reality warping we see today of talking rabbits speaking lines from “Our American Cousin” which got an unfair reputation due to its lead actor murdering a president.

Language changes, social mores change, which is why reading 19th century fiction generally falls flat for today’s youth.
