Once upon a time it was noticed by the DC comics editorial staff that comics featuring apes on the cover often sold far better than apeless issues. So, Julius Schwartz, among ohers, began to urge writers to include apes whenever possible.
This gimmick worked for several years, mostly during the so-called Silver Age of comics, and an almost uncountable invasion of ape characters proliferated… far more than anyone can accurately recall.
Just a few…
Titano, giant ape with Kryptonite eye beams. Mallah, with genius level IQ. Grodd, the ruler of a jungle city of super intelligent apes. Congorilla, who often swapped body and mind with a human, Congo Bill. Beppo the super monkey. Ultra-Humanite, a body swapping villainous enemy of the JSA, often possessing a gorilla body. Flying winged apes. Mer-apes. Apes from outer space.

I think that I shall never see
A billboard lovely as a tree.
Perhaps, unless the billboards fall,
I’ll never see a tree at all.

A comic strip with a giant ape?
