We used to own a small shop and always had a couple of charity boxes for heart and cancer on the counter. AND, guess what, some lowlife grabbed both of them and ran. When we got replacements, we punched holes in the sides and tied them down. Once bitten, twice shy.
Empty the tip containers to a secure location several times an hour. Nowadays, with most patrons paying by credit cards, store cards or waving the phone it’s easier for the customer to tip electronically. That being said, I witnessed a tip thief getting stopped and beaten up by the line of customers in a store one morning and as he tried to run out the local beat cops were walking through the door. What started out as a bad situation turned out to be a good morning for all. Except the thief.
I have seen in several places a tip jar that has a hole in the bottom secured over a hole in the counter with a box secured below. All tips go through the jar and below the counter out of sight and out of reach. I thought that was a great idea.

Today is the last day the bar I own will be open, because the barmaids and customers are such thieves.

Did the thieves forget about security cameras that seem to be every where these days?
