In Scotland, I once visited a ski training area with slopes constructed of a brown fiber similar to that used in lots of doormats. A week later, that area had real snow.
There used to be (maybe still) a Slush Bowl competition on Mount Baker on July 4. The idea was to get enough speed going down half-melted snow to water ski across a meltwater pond. Few ever made it all the way across, so winner was determined by distance.

They actually make – or at least they used to – special skis for skiing on grass.

Why not? I can fall down just as easily on grass.

They DO train the Olympic ski jumping in summer. Special treatment of the slide and they land in a pool.
