    Just picture one of the first artists… watching all his (or her) work run off, never to be seen again. “I should do some art I could keep around…” he or she thinks, and then starts eyeballing things that bears don’t eat. Voila, the cave wall is suddenly the first portfolio in history.

    Sounds about like the level of understanding most Americans have of history, but in his case it’s pre-history – not that he knows the difference.

    We can’t be certain, but he’s very likely correct. Remember Ötzi, the “ice Man?” Lots of tattoos, possibly applied as treatment for various injuries and illnesses. Tattoos are easy and automatically travel with you. And there’s substantial evidence that any sort of body adornment was early art. And tattoos seem very suitable for migrating hunters. So it’s not a bad theory. His only error was calling them “cavemen.” Caves were convenient temporary shelters, but people of the time he’s talking about almost certainly did what other primitive wanderers did, built simple shelters.
