It had to be a ram, otherwise the congregants would say “Ewe!”.
The ram was a symbolic of the atonement that Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, would later perform.
Another sacrifice made by the Hebrews, they take two goats, cast lots to see which goat would be sacrificed, the sins of Israel would be placed on the other goat and it would be released into the wilderness. This was the called the scapegoat.
