Also, now that I come to read this on my workstation rather than my phone, I am charmed by both the worldweary teacher in Panel 2, and the surprised and slightly flustered Fritzi in Panel 5.
A relatable comic today, with teacher who has put it with too much for too long and Nancy trying to get out of eating her food. Spinach should be stir-fried or raw. Do give it a good rinse, though.
James Thurber once wrote that there is always some drudgery in any job: “I suppose there is a certain amount of drudgery in being President of the United States.”
Fritzi should know well enough to realize this is some sort of scheme by Nancy. However, if wonder if using spinach as the vegetable was a reference to Popeye’s 90th birthday :)
A somewhat pessimistic view from the teacher but perhaps some merit to it. When I worked at a movie rental store (Google it, young ones) in college the last thing I wanted to do when I finished my shift was watch a movie. But it ultimately didn’t kill my enjoyment of movies.
I really relate to that teacher, and I think what she says is very true, for the middle-aged professional. I spent my working life as a classical musician and teacher. In youth, I was passionate about my music, orchestra, viola, piano, and voice. Now it’s all just tedious work, often unpaid. I’m only 53, and I’m already sick of everything, and longing for retirement, which seems very distant. In my worst moments, I regret having become a musician, and I wish I had at least learned some other tedious, stressful profession that paid a living salary and benefits.

Tell me more about the spinach. Is there some sort of cheese on it?

Teacher is a good candidate for early retirement. I,however, can see Nancy growing up to be a teacher. That’s when she actually, really does grow up.
