Women were not allowed to be in the arts for a long time including performance art so men had to dress in women’s clothing and since only whites they had to color their faces and such to look like someone else. Many Italians played American Indians even Burt Reynolds that actually was part Indian appeared in a few roles as part Indian like in early “Gunsmoke”. Some things have changed and what was common is now looked upon as not only archaic but also racist.
