sometimes I insist that my dog walk near me without stopping to sniff. He can get completely over taken by the scent left behind by some “sweet young thing”. Other times he can sniff around all he likes.
We have a large back yard. When we got a new dog, my youngest sister thought it was her job to take the dog on a walk around the perimeter, showing it where to stop and smell the roses (so to speak).
From then on, any time we let the dog out to do its business, she needed to hit all of those marks before she could return to the house.
Our error was letting her out without a leash so we had not way to real her back in.

She should have known without an explanation, unless she’s never seen a dog before.
