The smug backboard is trying not to laugh at her. Fixed stare, pinched mouth to suppress a guffaw. The hipster style chopped off beard is just icing on the cake.
The current Nancy is very much in the mold of the late 1950s and early 1960s comics version of Lois Lane… at least as far as “learning the right/wrong lesson” from her escapades. Over and over she schemes… to uncover Superman’s secret identity, to trick him into marrying her, to cast her rivals in a bad light. Over and over she is thwarted by Superman who often says some variation of “I hope you’ve learned your lesson.” And in that final panel, her thought bubble usually lets us know that she has done no such thing.
I believe Lucy Ricardo was the model for Lois’s dreams and schemes.
Eidolons, ideals, or tropes? All are eternal anyway.
My daughter had exactly this attitude at a certain age — she wanted to be great at something without putting in the effort to practice and get better. I find this Nancy to reflect something real in the world.
I suspect it has something to do with the movies that we show our young people.
I wish more of my peers could think like Nancy here. Too many women in the older millennial / younger gen x set are waaaay too good at exercising debilitating self-sabotage. At least I see this in my broader friend group. We all need a little Nancy attitude boost!

Many years from now, Nancy will have one of those “the difficult we do straight away, the impossible may take a little longer” signs above her desk.

In tangential Nancy news, readers of Bloom County back in the 80s when it was not a Facebook thing may find today’s rerun slightly amusing:

Self confidence is the key to success.
Of course, if you throw in ignorance and some authority, we may have a real problem.
