I learned how to drive on a stick shift. I drove them for years until 1998 and I got an automatic. I enjoyed not having to downshift and balance the clutch on hills. Could still drive one if I had to, but prefer automatics. :)
The first car I learned to drive had a stick shift on the floor. The first new car I bought was a Toyota with stick shift on the floor. My current and past two cars had stick shift on the floor.
My daughter learned to drive a stick shift but in practice drove automatics for years. Recently her car died permanently and she replaced it with a stick shift (it was just too good a bargain to turn down – excellent condition, low mileage, good price, etc.) So, she basically had to learn stick shift driving all over again and, although she’s fine now, it took a couple of months driving to be completely comfortable with it.
The car I have now is an automatic, but I fully intend to get a stick shift next time. Much better for winter weather, and as others have said, it’s a great theft deterrent.
Never could get the stick shift learned going forward my hubby told me not to use my lead foot. However I could drive it backwards like there was no tomorrow….my husband was amazed. So had automatic’s…..fast those, as I love Big A engines and fast fast cars…..“more power….more power” LOL

It’s a good skill to learn. I’ve taught four new drivers on stick shift.

I use to drive a stick shift but don’t think I could anymore after driving an automatic for so many years.

Could have been worse and been arrested for attempted car theft.

You’d think that all stick fetching dogs would be able to drive a stick shift!

P.S I love how hopeful Koko looks in wondering if his friend drove anywhere!
