There are people who can’t stand to be alone, and people who can’t stand not to be alone. They can love each other completely over a long and happy marriage, tolerating that one difference and appreciating everything else, but neither one can ever understand how the other feels about it.
I would think that retirement is hard on both husband and wife. All of a sudden you’re spending every moment with each other when you’ve had some time apart for years.
