I was out of town for “The Music Man” auditions, but the assistant director was a buddy, so I told him if there were any parts left I’d be glad to fill one. There were two – the constable and the top tenor on the school board. My best hope was to be on the school board, but my reliable range only goes to a high D. Was able to point them to another buddy who could hit those notes (actually, that’s how he beat me out for Nicely Nicely Johnson in “Guys and Dolls” and the Priest in “Man of La Mancha”), while at our Harold Hill’s request I slowly and dramatically closed the handcuffs on his wrists instead of (painfully for him) slapping them on.
