A tad political hère.. Adrian, you’re so right, unfortunately. Little Laika was sent into space (& died of heat & exhaustion); baboons have their hearts ripped out (thank you Prof.Barnaard); rabbits have their eyes burned so that we can wear mascara; beagles spend their short lives in Laboratories, wishing they’d never been Born……and thèse are only the things we know about and accept. Then there’s our légal entertainment: corrida, horse racing…Need I go on?
It is more than 150 years since Louis Pasteur developed vaccines that have saved millions of lives yet there are a growing number of uneducated people reverting to the Dark Ages thus causing outbreaks of diseases that were once controlled.
1.Gov’t. does take care of “illegals” if you are referring to the ones who are kept in cages and the little children separated from parents at the border at the cost of millions per day to taxpayers. ( but they are profitable for companies that build the tent cities etc., provide security etc.)
2. We have a long way to go on women’s rights, here and around the world.
And finally, to the original point, animals deserve to be treated like the sentient beings they are, not as property or trash.
Some cretin dumped 4 roosters in our mountain community, but 20+ people showed up to maneuver the rough terrain to catch them and take them to good homes. 20 to 1 (probably) makes me feel a little better about people.
Yes, but the animal problems are just getting more publicity than they used to. Yes, there are a lot of animal abusers out there, but:
In our state it is now legal to break a car window to save a dog (or baby). In our city we have four animal rescue shelters that are no-kill. (Last month they took in and adopted out almost 1000 dogs and cats that were left homeless by the storms down South.) When we called animal control about a stray pup in our neighborhood, the lady came within 15 minutes. She said he was so cute he would be adopted easily if nobody claimed him.
We spend more on pet food and medical care for animals than most countries spend on the same things for people, and you’re whining about animal rights?

what about factory farming in addition to just the relative handful of dogs and cats that are mistreated, right?

Ahem….important distinction coming up: Advances in technology DO NOT equate to advances in civilization. I call the 21st century as witness….
