Proper mental prep is very important – Jack N. says pros visualize the ball going where they want it to go, others visualize “don’t go there”, so it does; I suspect pitchers have same issue.
I’m reminded of Bull Durham, when Tim Robbin’s character is told by Kevin Costner’s character to throw a fastball at his chest. Robbin’s ends up thinking so much about it the throw is wildly off.

its true though if you mentally focus on something as well as looking at it the chances of hitting the target improve. Even inadvertently.

It’s like riding a motorcycle. The bike goes where you look. You stare at an obstacle (because you’re trying to miss it) and you hit it.

He must have gone to Chris Archer’s pitcher’s training camp.

When I played 1st base for Navy and bar league softball teams, I always told the infield to throw at my head.
1. It usually dropped to chest level.
2. If they did manage it, danged skippy I was gonna catch it.
