    I remember asking my mother how to spell (fill in the blank). She’d always answer: “Look it up in the dictionary”. And I would retort: “How can I look it up if I can’t spell it?”. She STILL wouldn’t spell the word for me. Yes, she knew how to spell. She was actually a teacher.

    There are different styles of dictionary: descriptive and prescriptive. A descriptive dictionary describes the way a language is used, a prescriptive dictionary describes how a language is supposed to be used. It’s a little picayunish, but for a long time most were prescriptive (Funk & Wagnall’s), this swung over so now most are descriptive (American Heritage).
