Not only might it be newer it is definitely colder further back. The stuff in the front, with all the people holding the doors open can approach room temperature.
And if there is a collect to win campaign (spell Pepsi Challenge) then you only bring out the needed winning letter on the day after the event is over then put that product in the back of the store stock so its found but no one could win. I know……we did that at company orders.
As a retailer I absolutely hate this. The jar of jam in the front row has a best before date of June 2020. The ones in back from the new case are dated December 2020. Given the closest best before date is over a year away why do people need the one that is a year and a half away? I understand it if the front jar is a month or 2 from its best before date and you won’t use it that quickly, but if it takes you over a year to eat one jar of jam … “Why the #%*& are you buying a full size jar of jam?”

And don’t take the first newspaper at the top of the pile. Oh, wait. No one is reading them these days anyway. LOL.

Smarter grocer, don’t stock until the last one sells.

Well, who doesn’t do that? I’m always checking expiration dates to get the newest stuff.
