Oh, Elvis, stop being such a sour puss! Take off those noise canceling ear phones and listen to nature’s symphony! At least Puck is showing appreciation—and toe beans!
I don’t know if I can get away with posting this, but an artist I admire has a wonderful daily painting today, and I thought the toe bean fans here would enjoy: https://twitter.com/Piper_Thibodeau/status/1133145974757613569
I know Elvis has a reputation for being the Siamese-who-can’t-be-pleased, but with the spring peepers, I wonder how sensitive his hearing is? There are certain sounds that set my teeth on edge — coins rubbed together, and rattling cutlery — but these noises don’t bother the people around me … any one out there have similar experiences to share?
The sounds of life in the spring and summer. The dry rustle of leaves in the fall or the way rain sounds, in different times of the year. The absolute quiet of the night in winter with snow on the ground. These are the sounds (or lack there of) that I have enjoyed out, and away from humanity. No phones. No traffic. No distractions.
Life for me is not just visual, it is audible and odoriferous. Rain smells different than a thunderstorm. A humid morning in Summer smells different than a dry morning in the fall. Do you know how loud your breathing sounds, standing still, in gentle snowfall?
I hope future generations are able too have the same experiential opportunities.
Oh, Elvis, what a face! I want to grab you and cover you in kisses! Puck, you are such a sweetheart, with the soul of a poet, I could cover you in kisses too! Drat, now my laptop screen needs to be cleaned, it’s covered in lip prints!
I looked up, Peep frogs and listened to it’s sound. While the info say they are mainly a northeastern frog, I swear they sound like the frogs I hear in South Carolina, when I visit my parents. If that is what I am hearing at night, then I love it! I open the window and let them lull me to sleep! Sorry you don’t like their music, like me and Puck, Elvis!
I’m with Puck—love the peepers! Grew up in the West Virginia mountains and they sang me to sleep many, many spring nights, over the soft sound of the nearby creek. Other things during that time were not so great, but that was almost heaven, indeed…
Elvis’s sound sensitivity reminds me of an old “Peanuts” strip, in which Lucy suddenly leaves, and Linus explains that their Mom had called her, using a special whistle “only fussbudgets can hear”.
The house where I spent most of my youth had a marsh “next door.” The peep toads and crickets sang every night from spring to the first frost. I loved it, and really missed it when I moved out. Then someone drained the marsh and built a house on the lot. They probably have a basement swimming pool—and I hope so.
& there was a lightening bug too! I love those guys! We used to gather in the field behind our house with our friends & catch them in jars & then let them go after. There are so few now…it’s kinda sad.

I don’t think those headphones are very effective for cats, what with their ears not being on the sides of their head.

OK. Earmuffs/headphones made me snort disgustingly and be glad I’d already put down my drink. Well played, Georgia! Love the surprise new details!
