The only SIMcard Andy will ever get is one of the prepaid ones. Or annother sucker will be standing again and againat the Capp’s home while he sneaks out the backdoor.
Unlike cell phones purchased the U.S., most phones in South America come unlocked and the majority of people prefer and use pay-as-you-go plans, rather than monthly billing plans.
When I get a new phone, I simply remove the chip from the old one and put it in the new one. All my information is then automatically in the new phone and erased from the old one – including the phone number and the number of minutes I have left on my phone. I then either give the old phone to someone who can use it or (as I did with the last one) sell it to a neighbor.
Because of all the security features on the newer “smart” phones, cell phone thieves (who abound down here) aren’t interested in trying to steal your information as much as they are selling your phone. They get rid of your sim card (chip) from your phone as quickly as possible so the cops can’t trace the phone.
In order to combat the black market and stolen phone sales, in Ecuador the newest Android and iPhones are supposed to be registered with the Government for sales tax purposes when the retailer purchases them and sells them. A hot phone is blocked from obtaining a new chip without either paying the sales tax or explaining to the National Police why the phone is coming up stolen on their computer.
There are still millions of dollars worth of black market, new electronics from China and elsewhere, smuggled into Ecuador. Thieves steal thousands of cell phone weekly, throughout the country.

Better have second thoughts, Chalkie, about giving Andy a (used or brand-new) mobile phone.

Just wait, Jack. Andy will discover the “lucrative” market for used phones in a day or two, and this particular nuisance will be over.

Oh, good grief, it’s hard to imagine Andy with a cell-phone. :)

I’m sure some trendy youth orientated pubs already provide that service.

Doesn’t it have to be switched over to Andy, so the calls aren’t still coming from Chalkie’s number, and Chalkie’s not still paying the bill?

Just got a new phone & kept the same number. The old phone does not work now & couldn’t be traded in so it is an alarm & a paperweight now!

My day has been manic too. The heat wasn’t much help either. I hate the summer.

Never thought I’d see the day when Andy got a cell phone. On another note, saw a woodpecker outside while walking.
