Richard's Poor Almanac by Richard Thompson for October 29, 2019
Transcript:
the trombone the medieval name for this was "sackbut," from the french word "sacqueboute." this translates as "sorry-ass." i'd skip it. trombone: bleat keyboard: ratatatatat. ratatatatatat tatatatatatat. ratatatatat chikaboom. percussion sorry, but all forms of percussion have now been replaced by the digitally sampled drum machine. the bagpipes features two settings, "off" and "really loud." the instrument of choice for aggressively melancholic loners. what more could you possibly want? kid: for my next selection, i'll play "a wee wadd o' haggis i' me craw," about a guy who chokes on some haggis.

The KC Symphony commissioned a new work celebrating the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad. They needed a sound for blasting. A percussionist got to hit a specially designed platform with a huge wooden maul. https://www.kcsymphony.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/20CS1-ProgramNotes.pdf

I like bagpipes, Scottish, Greek, Romany, whatever.
I refrain from admitting to being an “aggressively melancholic loner”!
