Richard's Poor Almanac by Richard Thompson for November 22, 2019
Transcript:
the winter sun this month the "sun," a flaming ball of mostly hydrogen, makes occasional & increasingly brief transits of the daytime sky. it is most often glimpsed between morning & evening drive-times, depending on visibility. man: what was that? woman: where? many ancient cultures depicted the sun as a big flaming smiley face, re-garding it as the bringer of happiness & dispeller of gloom. thus seasonal changes & sunsets were frightening - what if the big happy ball did not come back? it would be the end of the world! this left people anxious, antsy & somewhat depressed, in a kind of fatalistic way. person 1: look - it's the end of the world! person 2: and me in this silly hat. nowadays people know better. lady: hey! the sun's out- oops, too late. man 2: oh, no.

I was in Helsinki in January 1996 for a funeral. The sun rose at 11 am and went down at 3 pm.

Though the sun doesn’t combust, it is closer to a High Energy Plasma than rapid oxidation. A huge plasma -fusion reactor. Humans just haven’t figured out a way to synthesize it. Igniting it is possible, the self sustaining isn’t.

I like such stuff as dark cloudy skies, I never get weary of dreary, spooky, scary and I never get S.A.D. For I am glad. A bright sunshiny day is dreadful to me. But I have to drag myself outside to get enough sun for vitamin D to happen. And be careful not to linger too long or I shall burn.
For our local star, Sol, it holds both life and death in its rays upon us. Why life appeared at all is the blocking of the sterilizing and damaging rays while the life giving rays made it through more often. All hail the Sun, our benefactor and destroyer one day.

I do miss the Sun. My northward-facing condo gets shockingly little daylight during the long Chicagoland winter….
