Richard's Poor Almanac by Richard Thompson for June 05, 2021
Transcript:
The Beethoven's Birthday To the Ode to Joy Richard's Poor Almanac by Richard Thompson, and listen to the story of a man named Ludwig van, use to be you'd hear his music when you turn the radio on. Works of a genius- quartets, sonatas, nine symphonies of lasting fame, Verdammter! Now instead you'll have to listen to a lousy Redskins game.

We once had a privately funded classical music station. One day, I had it on the car radio while running errands. I went into a store and when I had returned, it was now an “Oldies” station.

You can still hear Beethoven, but Beethoven cannot hear you.
(Monty Python’s “Decomposing Composers,” although in Beethoven’s case the line was applicable while he was still alive.)

Nope. It’s a “Washington Football Team” game. I guess we could say Richard was lucky never to know that….

Ludwig’s taken quite a beating/ since his Choral Symphony/ even Trini Lopez sang it/ who can miss the i-ro-ny ?/// You can hear it in com-mercials/ it’s even good for selling beer/ it’s a real at-tention-getter/ (Lou, in your eye – is that a tear ?)
