Dogs and cats originally started hanging around humans because it was easier to get food. Through 10 to 20 thousand years of evolution, they still benefit being close to us for finding food but there is also mutual bonding now. It would really be interesting to see what develops 10 thousand years from now.
According to a book written by a medical examiner for a large metropolitan area, several years ago. Dogs that are trapped in an apartment or house with an owner who has died will lie down beside the dead owner and starve to death. A cat in the same situation will survive as long as it can by eating his dead owner!

Dogs are loyal, many to their death. Try not feeding a cat and see how long it sticks around.
