Us kids prefer to be mysterious, we savor suspense.

“Gonna go in THAT direction, huh? Alrighty then…”

[sound of getting out a battery and battery cables]

“In Social Studies, we’re studying about the Revolutionary War. That George Washington was something, wasn’t he? In Math we learned the times table for 8. For lunch, we had hotdogs with spinach on the side. I ate the spinach, and threw away the hot dog. Why do the other kids think I’m strange for doing that? At recess we played kickball. Jeremy kicked the ball and hit Jessica. We all accused him of being sweet on her. And having cooties. Then we had science class and Mrs. Jenkins talked about combusten or something. The fire department came and put out the fire.”

My mother had an unfair advantage while I was in elementary school (at least until we moved when I was in 6th grade). The principal was a personal friend of hers, mom usually knew what I had been up to by the time I got home, and the school was only 2 blocks from home.

I read an article that said the best way to get a kid talking about school is to ask a question like “Did anyone do something dumb today?”
