    A) Yes, that makes Walt the oldest living US veteran of WW1, a somewhat precarious position for a fictional character to be in.

    B) A pocket hourglass is just a bit of silliness, but there are such things as pocket sundials, which are discussed in Wikipedia s.v. “sundial”. I own an Aquitaine ring, myself; a handy thing to have if you’re in the cast of a Renaissance Faire.
