One of Jack Kirby’s granddaughters was on Antiques Roadshow last night with a private collection of Kirby’s work.
The “expert” acknowledged Kirby’s stature in comics. He couldn’t say enough compliments about the items she had, (some were from Kirby’s teenage years)
Not really an on-joke- just pointing out that there are not very many rich cartoonists. For every Schulz, Johnston, Walker, or Browne, there are 100 barely scratching by. All the strips in perpetual reruns on here? At least some of them, the artist had to get a steady job, and didn’t have time to do a daily any more.
Thank you, Andy; I’m sure you’re right about the joke. Yet there are cartoonists who hold down day jobs and still get out the toons. But even brilliant cartoonists cannot be sure their work will succeed (for example, Big Top, Citizen Dog, Bo Nanas to mention a few). In the comics biz there is little justice.
(At least Cathy Guisewite gave up her newspaper space to newer cartoonists for which I applaud her, as opposed to the zombie-strip Peanuts.)

but, he valued the collection at a pittance.

I’d love to understand the cartoonist in-joke I’m sure is lurking here.
