When I’m with my grandnephew and grandniece, I wish for their wishes to come true … I do it for my hubby, too, when he’s on the losing end of the wishbone! ;)
There will be no shortage of dandelions to wish on, it appears. Tommy, wish for a little more summer, please. The sun is setting before 8, for goodness sake!
“Monkey Paw” refers to the horrifying short story where wishes are granted in a fashion that makes you wish you’d never wished them. I would have expected this reference to show up on “Swan Eaters” before I ever saw it here.
I like that they are now recommending you leave the first dandelions of spring alone so the early bees have something to eat. That’s what I do until my Linaria bloom. (Native bees really love Linaria.)
TOMMY!!!! And you’re right! Wishes can be very complicated. Sometimes what you think you want isn’t really what you need. ((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((huge engulfing bear hugs, head boops and bumps going out to everyone who needs them))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
It sounds an interesting interesting tale so I just downloaded a free copy on Amazon Unlimited. I think I saw a similar story in one of those horror films that Amicus used to make. Tales from they crypt or some such title.
“The Kitty’s Paw,” tonight just after “Our IX Lives.”
Teaser video… A saloon in the old, wild West. The swinging door is pushed open. It’s close to the floor because it’s a cat door. Puck, dressed in full cowboy regalia steps into the saloon and says to the room at large, "I’m lookin’ for the man who shot my paw….
Also: In the kind of medical emergencies we’ve seen on “Our IX Lives,” do they summon help by dialing IX I I?
There’s another folklore about blowing on dandelion fluff. The number of breaths it takes to blow all the fluff off is what time it is. Haven’t tested that but do remember reading it in a book somewhere…mostly called clock flower. Here’s a couple of links:
I don’t have to blow on dandelion seed heads myself. The city waits until a windy day when all the seed heads are in their fuzzy glory before sending someone to mow the dandelions on the medians and verges. Seeds for all!
OT, but… yesterday a close friend was hit head-on while driving to work early in the morning. LSS, she was airlifted to the nearest trauma facility. She’s going to make it, but, for the time being, will remain in Trauma ICU with multiple injuries. She and her husband are the parents of 3 boys under the age of 5, one newly born with issues which required open heart surgeries shortly after birth. I know the Orb is good at prayers, so I’m hoping you will all be willing to send a few to my friend. She has a loving and supportive family wrapped around her, but I figured a few extra prayers couldn’t hurt. And thank you all :):)
My Opa was an incredible storyteller, and he decided to tell me the Monkey’s Paw in the growing dim of a thunderstorm late one afternoon. I still remember sitting on the floor of the living room, just able to see him on the couch, as his voice grew quiet and then booming and quiet again. When the son returned with a KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK (My Opa’s fist discreetly knocking on the wall) I about jumped out of my skin! He told us many stories growing up, but ‘The Monkey’s Paw’, ‘Rumpelstiltskin’, and a Chinese fairy tale about a beautiful maiden and her carp friend (much like Cinderella and the fairy godmother) were repeated favorites. He also told me the entirety of Jane Eyre over several visits when I was 9-10. Later when I read the book, I realized he had spoken many passages word for word from memory. He was a terrific grandfather, I was very lucky to have him.
Opa? German grandfather? You might enjoy Nina Willner’s Forty Autumns, the story of how her family was divided by the partitioning of Germany. Her Opa plays a strong role in what is an amazing story and book.
I forget if I have mentioned it in here previously, but I am a regular blood donor. I donated today as part of my regular donation cycle, but they reminded me that with Hurricane Dorian coming, supplies are likely to be tighter than they already are. If you are eligible to donate blood, please consider doing so over the next few days. Thanks!
I took a client to whale watch today. We saw whales, and more. We had a flight of pelicans fly past us at eye level, very close.
AND when we were in Depoe Bay we got to see a couple of Eagles! Woo Hoo!
For some reason the charter fishing company is no longer throwing the leavings from cleaning fish into the harbor. One of the boats is going out the mouth of the harbor and dumping the offal. We saw two different Eagles swoop in and grab something and fly it back to land.
The gulls part in front of the Eagles, like Moses parting the red sea. :D
I don’t see them as a weed. They can be cooked and served as a vegetable, the roots can be used as a coffee bean substitute, the petals are used to make dandelion wine, they actually help to ripen fruit, and I just learned a few months ago that dandelions are a prognosticator for how healthy your yard really is. Too many dandelions is a sign of too much of a certain nutrient in the ground, too few is a sign of poor yard health.

After hearing of the story of the three wishes, my very first thought was that you could use your last wish for 3 more wishes.

My idea is that anything can be a weed if it’s growing where you don’t want it.
