Lewreader: Baroque composers wrote some magnificent music for the recorder, and it’s not that hard to learn to play pretty decently.
Even better is the Irish tin whistle: the fingering is even simpler, you can get one for a couple of bucks if that’s all you have, and it can make Real Music in the hands of both a kid and a master concert artist. (Just for grins, check out http://www.chiffandfipple.com.)
Of course, having to listen to anyone practice any musical instrument is a serious character-building experience. :)
