Rick: Off on another "mission"? Jeff: I can't talk about it. Rick: Of course not. I understand. Jeff: I'm going to rescue President Bmzklfrpz! What do you think of that? Rick: I can think of nothing more ludicrous. Jeff: I'm taking Zipper. Rick: I stand corrected.

Clearly, Rick doesn’t respect Jeff.
Then again, Jeff hasn’t earned any …

Well for starters, Rick’s standing back and letting him do it without so much as a word of protest. Even though the likelihood is high that his son will come back in a box.
In that regard, he fits very well into the mold of the average Red State American. Amoral? Children do learn what they are taught.

I suspect Joanie and Rick were a bit caught up in their careers when Jeff was young. Can’t remember.
However, Jeff is an adult, and Rick does say it’s ludicrous. I suppose he could suggest to Jeff that he not go, but if memory serves, Jeff hasn’t listened to anything they’ve said for years.

Brilliant! I’d turn this plot into a full -blown screen play!
Are we sure Jeff isn’t Raoul Duke’s lovechild?

Rick loves Jeff as any father should. It’s just Jeff isn’t “any” son.

Joanie and Rick were very much caught up in their careers. Check August 1986 in the archives for good examples.

Actually, there is no telling what a couple of college boy slackers can accomplish with no plan & dumb luck. I’d put him in a dress & call him Bonnie Prince Charlie, my crazy uncle. “You know his mind ain’t been the same since he came out of Bumfartz’ prison.” Oh, wait, I’m the crazy uncle.

His father’s condescension angers Jeff so that he blurts out the mission. Then, when Rick annihilates the Red Rascal by calling his plan ludicrous, Jeff’s pathetic defense is that Zipper believes in him.
Rick stands for us skeptical readers, Jeff’s fantasy equates with G.T.’s strip, and Zipper represents the readers—and posters—who turn to Doonesbury as a surrogate for reality (“just a cartoon”).

Classic! Love it, love it, love it. Bet this storyline makes Doons history. Handily, Jeff has ended up with today’s date tattooed on his arm in panel 3. Nice, if accidental, touch. :))

Another failed attempt to impress his father…and yet, the Ludicrous reading has gone off the charts.
If Jeff does in deed pull this off, his father will have no choice but to blog about the incredible exploit.
His son…The Red Rascal!

And ^RSR, some think it’s only an 18-year sentence.
Nope! It’s life without parole. Play what’s dealt.
