That’s okay, ever since that boom accident, thr Commodore doesn’t remember how to salute. Or talk, or write, or come to think about it, holding the hose is the extent of the days obligations.
The Ballard Yacht Club sails every Saturday at 10 AM. That’s at the Commodore’s large bathtub on the third floor if you’ve forgotten. No motorboats allowed.
So long as it’s still “almost” you can get by with a tilted head. But if the “almost” gets doubtful, best you take another route or at least walk on the other side of the road. Now, at the Ballard St Yacht club it’s different matter and remember you salute the title, not that mean perverted little man that made fun of you.
If you aren’t in uniform there is no obligation or expectatio, In fact I don’t think it is even considered a proper thing to do though I could be wrong about that.

Don’t sweat it, Gene, the ‘Commodore’ was never really in the navy, he was the doorman at the Marina Hotel.

I think just a nod in the general direction should suffice.

Tipping one’s hat is the “civilian salute”. I thought that is what he is doing. :)

It looks like he is giving him the “middle finger” salute.
