My parents had a love story for the ages. They met in their teens at a friend’s wedding. Mom was 18 and Dad was one day shy of 21 when they got married. They never stopped holding hands, going to dances, spontaneously kissing, or snuggling on the couch to watch TV. Mom died March of 2018; they had been married for 67 years. Mom was in hospice at the end; the night before she died there was a terrible storm, so Dad actually stayed and slept in a chair next to her bed. He was holding her hand at the end. Today he is celebrating his 90th birthday.
My wife’s maternal grandparents had a similar story. They truly loved each other, but the early 20th century in PA was tough on young love. Sooo, they went to Hagerstown, MD and tied the knot. The marriage of those two lasted over 60 years until Papa died. He was something! He was a FANTASTIC card player and had the sharpest eyes of any man I’ve ever met. His eyes would have cut Rip Haywire apart!
My grandmother’s parents (Daddy’s side) thought Grandma Ruth was too young to get married so they whisked her from Kansas City, MO to Falls River, KS. Grandpa Lew followed and finally Nana and Papa gave in.. they were married in 1923 in Kansas City. Three kids, and they were married 54 years when Grandma Ruth died in 1977. They’d actually made it to my high school graduation in June that year. First child of eldest boy graduates, my family was like that. Grandpa lived another 9 years. He missed her so much…
My parents met over the back fence of my Uncle Jerry’s house (Granny and Mom lived next to him). They’d been plotting, jokingly they said, to get them together. 13 days later, Daddy asked Mama to marry him and they were married on July 13, 1958. I never believed they chose that date coincidentally ;) Mama left us in 2014 and Daddy in 2017..
