To be fair…the term “bug” doesn’t seem to mean anything anymore.

It was originally used exclusively for insects of the Hemiptera order like cicadas and aphids…but then it started being used for ALL insects, and then for non-insect arthropods like arachnids. (But not crustaceans, despite those being arthropods too.) People even use it to refer to earthworms and snails, despite those not even being arthropods.

There you go again, now Calvin will need a session with an emotional support animal (not Hobbs) and some hot coco. He may never get over this traumatic experience.

The report starts well, in spite of the teeny technical slip. Please continue, Calvin.

It’s interesting that while we see other children in this strip from time to time, only Suzy and Moe really develop as individuals. I guess that too many other “real” people would cramp Hobbes’ style.

Speaking of Suzy, is that her in the back row, second from left?

I like his writing style. Newspaper articles about science are sometimes written like that. They have to make a boring discovery sound super important such as scientists have discovered a star that is bigger than our sun.

Some people in government jobs are just like Calvin. Know nothing, an expert on everything and can’t stand criticism.

Yeah, it’s not exactly like you hear bats fly by; they’re silent as owls flying. (I know about the echolocation thing, so don’t respond; for most species that’s inaudible to humans. Your mileage may vary.)

Should’ve gone with the rodents! But then if he took it a bit literally, the class could’ve yelled “BATS AREN’T RATS!”

Admittedly it’s a pretty good intro – Cal could get work in creative writing… or with a voice (presumably) a few octaves lower, replace that movie announcer guy…
