As I understand it, the colours are picked out in spring. They just show up when the trees stop making Chlorophyll. The chlorophyll absorbs most of the colours and reflects various shades of green. When the chlorophyll runs out, all the underlying colours come out.
But how does one get one’s neighbors to stop blowing the leaves from their properties onto ours?
We caught one of the fellows for the neighbor to the south doing this a couple of years ago and he ran away.
The one for the north side it was obvious, if gross. Husband and I shovel up the leaves with a snow shovel to bag it. People on the north have a pit bull who uses their backyard as his bathroom. Husband went to shovel a pile of leaves and stepped in dried dog poo which had been blown over with leaves. Last year when this gardener’s crew came and was blowing the leaves I stood off to the side watching – they blew them onto our property and then when husband told them I saw them do this not only did the boss deny this but he said we only said that because we keep our property crappy and don’t take care of it! (We are in our late 60s and do our best – and when we could afford and were looking for someone to do our lawn and such and called them – they did not even bother to call us back!

Autumn
For all the children of the earth This is the busy time Storing and preparing all Their homes for Wintertime
The woods are full of colors bright They seem to be on fire Reds and yellows, brown and golds Of which you can not tire
The wind blows harder than before To blow leaves to the ground They make a carpet soft and bright Wherever you are bound
The chilly days and moon-filled nights The beauty of the fall The autumn season has arrived To mystify us all

Record heat, record dry – this year the leaves are in a variety of brown. Still setting records of heat and dry.
