Although I’ve heard of the cliche repeatedly, I have never stayed at a hotel that did this. Absurdly priced chocolates in the mini-bar, yes. Free chocolates on the pillow/bed, no. Strikes me as more of a potential nuisance if you don’t see them before crawling into bed after a dreary day of conferences.
