I don’t think she’s thinking about what you’re thinking about, Smokey.

“You don’t buy black lingerie unless you want someone to see it.” – Bianca, “10 Things I Hate About You.”

After Noah lands the ark, he sets all the animals loose and tells them “Go Forth and Multiply!”

Sure enough, in a couple of years he sees that the two tigers have become eight, the two dogs have become 16, the two rabbits have become 2048, and so on. But then he sees the two snakes slither by, followed by their sole offspring.

“What’s the matter?” asks Noah, “why haven’t you multiplied like I instructed you when I let you off the ark?”

“We can’t help it,” replied one of the snakes. “We’re adders.”

The snakes should have had two offspring, fritzoid. (“One plus one equals…”)

At the risk of overanalyzing, I must disagree. If you start with two and multiply, you get four, then eight, then 16, and so on. If you start with two and add, you must pass through three, then four, then five. Since the snakes reproduce by incremental addition rather multiplication, their number increases linearly rather than geometrically.

The Noah story continues: After hearing that the snakes were adders, he instructed his sons to gather some logs and construct a table. When they were done, they gave it to the adders and they immediately began to multiply!. When his sons asked him what had happened, Noah replied “Adders can only multiply using a log table”.
