Jason Todd was doomed to die before he ever actually appeared as Robin. His death in the line of duty was alluded to in Frank Miller’s “Dark Knight Returns” as the reason Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson hadn’t spoken in years: “Jason was a soldier, He honored me.”
When they finally introduced him as Robin II in the regular continuity, it was a forgone conclusion that he was a dead Boy Wonder walking, and the readers’ poll to determine whether or not Joker would kill him when Joker did in fact kill him was just a pretense: “If ’tis to come, then ’twill not be today. If it be today, then ’tis not to come. Be it NOT today, yet it WILL come.”
