It’s a weird and challenging dynamic; the mother-in-law. Father-in-law is also strange. To me it’s a little like aunts and uncles, but with more expectations and a bit more edgy. And yes, at times you want them dead.
I was doing some work in an unpopulated part of a college library one summer, and I had a radio that picked up VHF audio, so I was listening to cartoons (as one does). It really brought home how many lame mother-in-law jokes are in Tex Avery’s otherwise notable faux-documentary cartoons (like TV OF TOMORROW). They drained much of the humor from the cartoons, alas. A corrosive cliche.

Mothers in law have been given a bad rap I guess. I’ve never been married.

Her: “Can’t you say anything nice about me??”
Him: “You have a much nicer mother-in-law than I do!”

My mother-in-law was the sweetest person… until my father-in-law died. Now, weirdness just exudes from her. :-(

My wife’s mother-in-law is dead. Lucky her. Mine is alive. Lucky me.

In “Bewitched” Endora was the mother-in-law from Hell. And Darren didn’t make it any better.
